Kintting is Cool!: I love to knit! I am a total novice and make quite a bit of mistakes, but I find it enjoyable. It is amazing to me to see a ball of yarn be transformed into this wonderfully crafted piece of work. I first began to knit with my mother in law. And being that she is an expert seamstress and knitter, I knew I was in good hands. Sad to say, it has been months since I have picked up my needles and I long to get some free time and finish that scarf I started in the Winter. My specialty (well, really the only item I know how to make) are scarves.
In recent years, knitting has become fashionable and chic. There are countless books, boutique yarn shops, classes, knitting groups both physical and online. The opportunity to learn and surround yourself with those who enjoy knitting is bountiful and much more accessible. According to the New York Times, we are even seeing the emergence of handcrafted garments competing and standing their own ground in the fashion world. NYT further says that “formerly neglected domestic arts like knitting, quilting, sewing and embroidery are being eagerly embraced, especially by the young. Their passion kindled by the abundance of handcrafted looks on the runways, they are blowing the dust off these folksy skills and lending them the bright sheen of style.” Read more
Get Bitten Twice: I, like so many others, feel the skepticism of the quality of SJP's Bitten clothing line. It is tough to conceptualize high quality with a price point that is $20 and below. Have we been brainwashed to believe you must pay a high price for quality? Luckily, New York Times' writer Cathy Horyn was able to interview Howard Schacter, the Chief Partnership Officer of Steve & Barry's and learn more about how this is accomplished without the use of sweatshops. This is nothing new to Steve & Barry's - it appears that they pride themselves in being a resource for quality clothing at a extremely reasonable price point. I came across this interesting New York Times article about Sarah Jessica Parker and her new clothing line Bitten. Personally, I am very excited about her line and was even more intrigued (and a bit perplexed too) when I found out that every single item cost $20 or less. Part of me is extremely excited that everything is so affordable yet the other part is skeptical of the quality that this low price range can bring. For anyone who has actually seen the line, let me know what you think. I am hoping to see it for myself this weekend. Read more here
